A Fantastic And Extremely Rare Antique Italian Gilded Wood Carving, 1700’s
This extraordinary and one of a kind treasure was discovered during my latest trip on the 1st January of 2022 in Florence, Italy. Dating from the 18th century, it is a truly fantastic gilded wood carving referred often in Italian as ‘la grottesca” [grotesque] which in art is a general adjective for the unusual, mysterious, magnificent, fantastic… and thus is often used to describe “strange” shapes such as masks for example. Such imagery has been in existence in Italian art since Roman times and it became extremely popular during the Renaissance in particular in frescoes [wall and ceiling decorative paintings] of many palaces as well as in the decoration of pottery, embroidery, etc. This example is remarkable in its unique design enhanced by the amazing sculptural quality - wood is hand carved with exceptional attention to detail and masterful craftsmanship. In the past it was most certainly a decorative interior adornment of a palace or a theatre. The carving measures about 36 x 35 x 8 cm or approximately 14.1 x 13.7 x 3.1 inches and it is in lovely’s antique condition with some signs of ageing [minor loss of gilding] which in my opinion only brings forward its true beauty and splendour today. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
