A Fascinating Antique French Momento Mori With Five Crystal Skulls, 1800's
This is a truly fascinating and extremely rare antique French momento mori that was just discovered in the South of France. Dating from the 19th century it consists of a large beveled glass box that contains within five extraordinary skulls hand carved from natural crystals such as quartz, onyx, sodalite, red jasper and aventurine.
Such extravagant boxes were created in the past to hold jewellery but also curiosities and other precious items. This is a wonderful example of such a treasure that bears some signs of the past which in my opinion only brings forth its true beauty and splendour today. The skulls are in a great condition. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
Memento mori is an artistic or symbolic metaphor acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in art and architecture from the medieval period onwards.
