Antique French Bronze Ornaments, Billiard Pockets, 1800's
Remarkable and extremely rare antique French bronze ornaments with female heads, mid 19th century.
These exquisite French embellishments that date from the 1850's are truly extraordinary in their beauty and their fascinating and curious design. Once they were used as adornments for the corners of an ancient billiard table [as pockets for balls]. They are entirely made of gilded cast bronze that gives them a magnificent sculptural quality, and depicting female heads - most probably inspired by the classical Greek godesses or muses - surrounded by luscious and intricate floral patterns. The heads are movable. Such items are highly decorative and could be displayed in many innovative ways, on their own on a flat surface perhaps or in combination with other decorative items in order to create a spellbinding interior exhibit. Each ornament measures about 18.5 x 15 x 9 cm or approximately 7.3 x 6 x 3.5 inches and they are in lovely antique condition with minor signs of ageing which in my opinion only brings forward their true beauty and splendour today. They are exactly as I discovered them in July of 2021 in Avignon in the South of France . For the full condition please refer to the images!
