Pulcinella is a classical character that originated in commedia dell'arte of the 17th century and became a stock character in Neapolitan puppetry. Pulcinella's versatility in status and attitude has captivated audiences worldwide and kept the character popular in countless forms since his introduction to commedia dell'arte by Silvio Fiorillo in 1620. Ever since it became an inspirational character for many visual artist, poets, writers and a Russian composer Igor Stravinsky composed two different ballets for the Ballets Russes that were inspired by variations of this character [Petrushka (1911) and Pulcinella (1920)].

This is a stunning example of early - mid 19th century Pulcinella bust that is entirely hand carved from wood, except the eyes which are made of glass. Once its was a large size puppet used in a theatre. It is created with fantastic attention to detail and a masterful artistry and talent that is just astonishing.  I discovered it a few years ago in Florence, Italy where it was found within a gorgeous mini suitcase with initials GN. This somehow caught my attention because of its fascinating artistic quality. This is a sculptural treasure, mesmerising in its appeal and artistic interpretation that is just stupendous in my opinion. The bust is in lovely antique condition with some signs of ageing that only brings forward its true greatness and splendour today. It is exactly as I discovered it.
