Antique Spanish Santo, 1800's
A truly outstanding and extremely rare one of a kind antique Spanish santo statue, mid 19th century.
This exquisite santo was discovered recently during an estate sale close to Avignon in the South of France. It is a magnificent masterpiece of the mid 1800's, hand carved from wood and painted in shades of blue and natural tones with a stunning attention to detail and masterful craftsmanship that still after so many years radiates its breathtaking beauty and elegance. Even though it was discovered in France the santo originates from the Catalan region of Spain, close to Barcelona, where devotionals figures were created in the past to represent saints, in this case most probably the Virgin Mary. Stripped of its clothes and regalia as it is now, this is a true work of art showing a wonderful female figure whose arms can move gently and be displayed in a desired position, perhaps even holding some decorative objects such as a bouquet of flowers, natural sea corals, jewellery etc. These kind of figures are the jewel in the crown of interior decor as they look so graceful when displayed on their own or in combination with other decorative items in order to create an eye catching and layered interior effect like no other as shown in the last image. The statue is standing on a fascinating celestial body with a serpent surrounded by clouds. It measures approximately 97.5 x 48 x 23 cm or about 38.4 x 18.9 x 9.1 inches and it is in great antique condition with minor signs of ageing that in my opinion only bring forward her true beauty and splendour today. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
