Antique Spanish Santo, 1800's
A truly remarkable antique Spanish santo of baby Jesus from the early 1800's.
This fabulous santo was discovered on my trip to Sevilla in Andalusia where it originates from. It is a fascinating and extremely rare santo of baby Jesus. The santo is masterfully made of papier-mache that has been painted. It has glass eyes and is still dressed in its original robes bejewelled with tiny crystals. The lying figure is positioned on a hand carved and gilded stand with a little pink pillow. This is a truly exceptional antique treasure of captivating beauty and presence like no other with signs of ageing that in my opinion only enhance its true charm and splendour today. These could be seen mainly in the ageing of the silk robes and some flaking of the paint. It seems that some of the fingers were restored in the past. In the past such santos were commissioned during the Christmas period to be displayed in churches as well as private homes celebrating the birth of Jesus. The santo is exactly as I discovered it.
