Baroque Hand Reliquary, 1700's
A truly astonishing and extremely rare antique Baroque reliquary from Germany, early 18th century or older.
This is a fascinating antique reliquary in the shape of a human arm that dates from the early 1700's or older. It originates from the southern part of Germany where it was discovered recently. The reliquary is created from hand carved wood that was painted and partially gilded with a glass "window" below the hand that still contains its original relic adorned with a captivating "klosterarbeit" or "monastery work" in gold bullion wire and blue crystals. The name of a saint is written on a little paper which is difficult to decipher.
In the past such reliquaries were made by nuns and monks as devotional objects to be displayed in churches. They were also constructed as souvenirs for pilgrims and visitors of sacred sites. This is where the term "monastery work" derives from. Such sacred objects are extremely rare today. The reliquary measures about 33.5 x 8.5 x 6 cm or approximately 13.2 x 3.3 x 2.3 inches and it is in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing that in my opinion only enhance its true profound presence and splendour today as well as provide its authenticity. Its timeworn patina created by the passage of time is exceptional. After all this object is more than 300 years old and exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
