Recently I went to France for my last treasure hunt of this year. The 4000 km drive felt like not a great deal as I experienced an adrenaline rush and thrilling energies for days prior to this adventure. It doesn’t really matter how many times I have done this journey, it is always exciting beyond words - something like a kid walking into a toy shop for the very first time.
A few times a year thousands of sellers, merchants and dealers from Europe gather in the South of France, for what must be the biggest and the most significant antique fair in the world. For three days and in three different locations from the early hours in the morning thousands of professional people from all over the globe rush to find that perfect treasure, a masterpiece or “a ruby in the dust” as I call it.
Most of the thrill comes from the hope of a golden discovery. The first hour is always frantic with people running wild, quite comical at times. Some items are still trapped inside the trucks while others are in boxes waiting to be unpacked.
But as time goes on and calmness descends, one can finally focus properly and start looking around the treasure trove of items, placed on tables, walls, the floor… Honestly, sometimes it is like looking for a needle in a haystack or truffling for those precious mushrooms.
I personally don’t make any plans prior to this adventure in terms of what I wish to discover and take home with me. I enjoy being surprised and let my eye guide me to those treasures that I find exceptionally beautiful, and remarkable in their nature and true opulence of course. My only rule is that I will exclusively purchase the items I personally fall in love with and would proudly have them in my own home and shop on display.
This was a wonderful adventure and I came back with a few extraordinary pieces, each one bursting with so much beauty and one of a kind story that simply makes my heart sing.
Alla prossima!
