A Fabulous Antique French Book Stand, Hand Carved And Gilded, 1700’s

This fabulous and rare antique French treasure that derives from the late 18th century was once an altar book stand that is entirely hand carved from wood and gilded. Its intricate details consist of large initials JHS [Jesus Christ] amongst the most magnificent grapevine and wheat metaphorically denoting to the body and blood of Jesus. This is a large stand measuring about 73 x 40 cm or approximately 28.7 x 15.7 inches when closed [as shown on the first and last images]. When open it is about 50 x 40 x 50 cm or approximately 19.6 x 15.7 x 19.6 inches and it is in fascinating antique condition with signs of ageing mainly seen in the gloriously timeworn patina created by the passage of time [with partial flaking of gilding]. It is this distressed appeal that in my opinion only brings forward its true captivating beauty and splendour today. Today it could look exquisite if shown on its own or used as a luscious display for favourite books as well as works of art such as paintings, drawings and photographs.
