A Fascinating And Extremely Rare Antique Italian Memento Mori Chest, 1700's
This is a truly fascinating and extremely rare antique Italian Memento Mori chest that dates from the early 18th century or older. Discovered recently in Tuscany this curious and remarkable treasure is a made of wood that has been hand painted, depicting two skulls on its front. It also has the original lock [the key is not present]. The sides feature metal handles. They are decorated with crossed bones while the top with the writing "Memento mori". This is an artistic symbol or a metaphore that acts as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in art and architecture from the medieval period onwards. The chest measures about 26 x 43 x 24 cm or 10.2 x 16.9 x 9.4 inches and it comes with a magnificent patina created by the passage of time, which in my opinion only enhances it true artistic quality and presence today. It is exactly as I discovered it in Tuscany. For the full condition please refer to the images!
