A Gorgeous Ancient Spanish Portrait Painting In Original Frame, 1600's

1 750,00 €Price

This is an absolutely gorgeous and extremely rare ancient portrait painting of a female saint that originates from Mallorca. Painted during the 17th century this wonderful oil on canvas is still found in its original frame that measures about 73.5 x 64 cm or approximately 28.9 x 25.1 inches. The painting depicts the early Christian Saint Petronilla. Considering that is about four centuries old it is in lovely antique condition -  with signs of ageing expected for the items of this period. It is exactly as I discovered it recently together with another painting from the same anonymous artist [which is also in my shop listings]. For the full condition please refer to the images!

Saint Petronilla [or Saint Patronille as written on the painting] was an early Christian saint, around the 1st century, who was traditionally identified as the daughter of Peter. Stories associated with her include those explaining how she was so beautiful that Peter had locked her up in a tower to keep her from eligible men. Finally, a pagan king named Flaccus, wishing to marry her, led Petronilla to go on a hunger strike, from which she died.
