A Gorgeous Italian Griffin Relief In White Carrara Marble, 1800's
This is an absolutely gorgeous griffin relief that is carved in a white Carrara marble plate most probably during the late 19th or early 20th century. The griffin is a mythological creature that symbolizes strength, wisdom, courage, and guardianship. It has the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle and was often seen in the past in coats of arms, in noble family houses and palaces etc. This one is carved on a flat marble plate suggesting that it was perhaps above an entrance door of a prominant place in Northern Italy. It was discovered recently in Venice and it measures about 33.5 x 23.5 x 3.5 cm or approximately 13.1 x 9.2 x 1.3 inches. It is exactly as I discovered it - in lovely condition - except the black wood frame that was added later for an easier display. This is a highly decorative treasure.
