A Magnificent French Wood Carving With Distressed Patina, Early 1800's
This is an absolutely magnificent and large antique French wood carving that was discovered recently in Avignon in the South of France. It originates from the early 19th century or older and it comes from a chateau in Bordeaux where it was displayed at the entrance of the music room. The top of the carving bears a stunning bow with ribbons adorned with roses. Below are drums decorated with two suns, three fleurs-de-lis and a double headed eagle, most certainly the heraldic symbols of the family's [owners of the castle] coat of arms. There are also a trumpet as well as intertwined olive and palm branches with a single tassel as the far end. This is a highly decorative and rare treasure that measures about 70 x 56 x 4 cm or approximately 27.5 x 22 x 1.5 inches. It is exactly as I discovered it with lovely timeworn and distressed patina that gives this treasure a stunning appeal today. For the full condition please refer to the images!
