A Pair Of Remarkable Italian Baroque Reliquary Busts, Early 1700's
This remarkable pair of Baroque sculptures was discovered in Arezzo in Italy. Originating from the early 1700's or older they are entirely hand carved from wood that is painted and gilded in the most exquisite way. The busts are created with a masterful talent and artistry as reliquaries or sculptural vessels for relics of prominent saints. The faces are extremely handsome yet gentle in their appearance. Two paper stickers are found on the back of one of the statues explaining that they come from a palace in Rome. Unfortunately further details have been lost through the centuries of their existence giving them a certain aura of enigma and mystery. They are in lovely antique condition with a majestic timeworn patina that gives them a profound presence and appeal like no other. In my opinion this only brings forth their true beauty and splendour today as well as provide their authenticity. They are exactly as I discovered them.
