A Pair Of Exquisite Italian Marble Sculptures, The Grand Tour, 1800's

This is a pair of exquisite antique Italian marble busts that originate from Naples. Discovered recently and dating from the 19th century these magnificent sculptures in Neoclassical style were created during the Grand Tour craze when such items were acquired as souvenirs. The Grand Tour was the custom - during the 17th to 19th century - of an adventurous journey through Europe, with Italy as the key destination, undertaken by upper-class young men who had come of age. They were typically accompanied by a tutor or a family member. Grand Tours, which began around, 1660 served as an educational rite of passage. During this period the creation of outstanding masterpieces - usually in miniature form - flourished. There was a huge demand and desire to bring home souvenirs of these adventures and learning opportunities. These two sculptures are a fabulous example of such art. They are hand carved from white and green marble with an exceptional attention to detail and executed just masterfully. Still in stunning antique condition and exactly as I discovered them.
