A Pair Of Fabulous French Royal Emblems With Crowned Salamanders, Metal, 1800's

This is a pair of fabulous antique French royal emblems that date from the 1800's or older. Discovered recently in France they originate from the Loire Valley and are made of metal, most probably iron. Each one bears a crowned salamander among flames. The ancient writers believed salamanders could live in fire and were able to put flames out with their cold bodies. The crowned salamander became the personal emblem of King Francis I of France [François I], who reigned from 1515 to 1547. For the king this symbol meant that he would nourish virtue, faith, and knowledge while crushing sin, injustice, and rebellion. These emblems were shown on royal buildings and possessions such as books, frames and furniture. Each one measures about 28 x 18.5 x 5 cm or approximately 11 x 7 x 2 inches. These are highly decorative treasures that could be used in many creative ways. They could be displayed on their own or be mounted on book shelves, large frames, above doors etc. They are in lovely antique condition and exactly as I discovered them with signs of ageing mainly seen in a gorgeous patina.
