A Remarkable And Extremely Rare Italian Memento Mori, Carved Marble, 1700's
This is a truly remarkable and extremely rare antique Italian Memento Mori that was discovered recently in Naples. Dating from the early 18th century this outstanding sculptural treasure is hand carved from marble with great artistic quality and expression. Memento Mori is a Latin phrase that translates to "remember you must die". The concept traces back to ancient Greece and Rome, where victorious generals had a servant whisper reminders of mortality into their ear during parades to keep them humble. Ever since it fascinated and inspired writers, philosophers, composers and visual artists across the globe - becoming a great symbol of the passage of time. This rare and magnificent example is one of a kind white marble sculpture that measures about 22 x 23 x 30 cm or 8.6 x 9 x 12 inches. It is in lovely antique condition considering its age with a stunning patina created by the passage of time. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
