A Remarkable Pair Of Antique Italian Standing Figures From Siena, 1800's
This is a remarkable pair of antique Italian standing male figures that come from Siena in Tuscany. Originating from the early 1800's or earlier, their heads, hands and boots are sculpted in hand painted "carta pesta" or papier mache while the bodies are created from wire frames and straw. Dressed in elaborate clothes, each one holds a wooden pole with a flag [representing city districts of Siena]. The figures relate to "The Palio di Siena", a horse race held twice each year in Siena. This is a tradition dating back to the 17th-century and such statues - as these two - would be placed in public spaces and windows as a decoration and celebration of these events. They are extremely rare and highly decorative in lovely timeworn condition that in my opinion only brings forth their true beauty and splendour today.
