A Wonderful And Rare Ancient Italian Majolica Plate With A Crown, 1700's

550,00 €Price

This is a wonderful antique Italian majolica plaque with a stunning coat of arms that dates from the early 18th century but it could be older. Discovered recently in Luca, Tuscany this hand painted pottery plate was once most certainly displayed on an aristocratic palazzo. The top is adorned with a magnificent crown. At the bottom, below the face of a lion it is written "lustitia et pax" meaning "joy and peace". This is a highly decorative ancient treasure that measures about 25.5 x 18 cm or approximately 10 x 7 inches, still with vibrant colours and beautiful presence. It is in lovely antique condition with a few minor chips on the edges which is expected for items of this material and age. However this patina only brings forth its true beauty and splendour today in my opinion. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!

From the mid 15th century onwards, majolica pottery was reaching Italy from Spain, Majorca and beyond. Majolica [or maiolica ] is tin-glazed pottery decorated in colours on a white background. The most renowned Italian maiolica is from the Renaissance period. By the late 15th century, multiple locations, mainly in northern and central Italy, were producing sophisticated pieces for a luxury market in Italy and beyond.
