An Enigmatic Antique French Male Portrait, Framed Oil On Canvas, 1700's
This is an enigmatic antique French portrait painting of a gentleman that dates from the late 18th century. Discovered recently in the South of France this wonderful oil on canvas is an anonymous portrait created with a great artistry. Through its existence some of the paint has flaked away adding to its mysterious allure and presence today. Sometimes - such as in this case - I purposefully acquire works of art that show their impressive age as this in my opinion only adds to their unique timeworn beauty and splendour today. The painting was found on its original wood stretcher measuring about 61 x 51 cm or approximately 24 x 20 inches. At the later stage a black wooden frame was added measuring about 74.4 x 63.7 x 4.5 cm or 29.2 x 25 x 1.7 inches. It is exactly as I discovered it in Avignon.
