An Exquisite Pair Of Antique Furietti Centaurs, Signed Bronze Figures, 1800's

3 800,00 €Price

This is a truly exquisite pair of Furietti Centaurs created from bronze during the 19th century. Discovered recently in Rome this magnificent pair of renowned Italian centaurs is fine in its remarkable artistic quality enhanced even further by a mesmerizing patina created by the passage of time.

The Furietti Centaurs [known as the Old Centaur and Young Centaur] are a pair of Hellenistic or Roman sculptures of centaurs based on Hellenistic models. One is a mature and the other is a young centaur with his arm raised. The original sculptures were found together at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli by Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti in December 1736 and can be seen today in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.

After their discovery, the pair became extremely popular during the 18th century, and ever since casts of them were created and collected across Europe. This is one of those pairs. Both sculptures are signed by their maker at the base and they are in great antique condition - with minor signs of ageing - and exactly as I discovered them.
