Antique French Gilded Wood Carving With Birds, 1800's
A truly superb and extremely rare antique French gilded wood carving from the early 19th century.
This exquisite treasure that was discovered recently in the South of France is entirely hand carved from wood and masterfully water gilded. It dates from the French Empire period at the beginning of the 1800's. This embellishment was once most probably the crowning part of a furniture centrepiece or a grand mirror. Its stunning design consists of a laurel wreath and two gorgeous birds, a parent feeding its chick. The carving has a flat back with a little hook which makes it easy to hang it on a wall if desired. This highly decorative adornment measures about 21 x 30.5 x 4 cm or approximately 8.2 x 12 x 1.5 inches and it is in great antique condition with minor signs of ageing which in my opinion only enhance its true beauty and splendour today. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
