A Stupendous And Extremely Rare Antique French Processional Banner, 1800's
This stupendous antique French banner that dates from the 19th century is exceptional in its captivating beauty as well as the great craftsmanship that went into its creation. It is masterfully hand embroidered with an exceptional floral design that surrounds a painting of the Virgin Mary [on one side] and a red robed saint [on the other side]. The silk banner is embellished with luscious gold bullion trims, four tassels, ropes and a fringe that give it a wonderful aura of true opulence. It is on its original wood pole with gilded finials making it very easy for display on a wall. The banner measures about 130 x 96 x 5 cm or approximately 51.2 x 37.8 x 1.9 inches and it is in lovely antique condition - considering its age and delicate materials that it is made of - with minor signs of ageing that in my opinion only bring forward its fascinating beauty and splendour today. This could be seen in some thinning of the silk background and minor flaking of the paint of the paintings of the saints. It is exactly as I discovered it in the South of France.
