Antique Italian Wood Statue, Late 1700's
A truly fabulous and one of a kind antique Italian wood statue of a boy with a ball, late 1700s - early 1800's.
This is an exquisite antique Italian putto statue or an artistic representation of a naked boy that dates from the late 18th - early 19th century. The statue is entirely hand carved from wood with a masterful talent and artistry depicting a stunning boy with a wooden sphere on a rope. This is a magnificent figure that is mounted on a square pedestal. Once the statue represented the child Christ and was most probably fully gilded. Through the passage of time all the gilding has flaked away revealing in the process the under layers of gesso and wood. This has created a fascinating patina of exceptional beauty and splendour that gives in my opinion this precious masterpiece a superb appeal like no other. It measures about 54 x 17 x 16 cm or approximately 21.2 x 6.7 x 6.3 inches. It is in lovely antique condition and exactly as I discovered it last year in Florence, Italy.
